HONK! Volunteer

We need your help! HONK! Bradford will be a unique opportunity to see 16 streetbands from the UK, Europe and USA perform over 3 days in September in different parts of the district.

This event is hosted by the Peace Artistes who have been bringing street music to Bradford for the last 40 years.

We will need volunteers to help this run smoothly and contribute to creating a happy, vibrant and memorable atmosphere for the weekend.

As a volunteer you could be involved in one of several different roles, and meet some of the most talented and exciting streetbands in the world!

All volunteers will be trained around their roles and responsibilities, and will be supported by a named member of the Peace Artistes. There will be clear information about the reporting of any concerns or queries.

If you are interested in volunteering for one of the roles below, please fill in our Google form. We will then be in touch to answer any questions, and to invite you to an information session.

Roles and times

  1. Set up at Bradford Hotel – Thursday 25th September 6-10pm

This will involve helping to organise and decorate the function suite on the ground floor of the Bradford Hotel in central Bradford. There will be some moving of furniture and carrying of equipment. Tea/coffee/light snacks will be provided

2. Meet and Greet team Bradford Hotel – Friday 26th September 1:30-6pm

Visiting bands will be arriving after 2pm and will be welcomed to Bradford and their base for the weekend. Volunteers will help with registration, signposting, provision of wristbands, and helping with refreshments and other roles as needed. There may be some lifting if bands require help moving instruments. Tea/coffee/light snacks will be provided.

3. Band Buddies – Friday 26th September 6pm-9pm, and Saturday 27th September 10am-4pm

Each visiting band will be assigned two “Band Buddies”, one from the Peace Artistes, and one volunteer. So you won’t be on your own! But you will be helping to ensure that the bands are in the right place at the right time, and that they are updated with any changes to the programme. Full training will be provided. We have visiting bands from Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, and USA alongside UK based bands. There will be 8-20 musicians per band.

4. Drivers – Friday 26th September 6-9pm, and Saturday 27th September 8.30am-1pm

Some bands will not have their own transport so will need taking to community venues around the district. We will need a number of volunteer drivers to facilitate this. You will need to be over the age of 25 with a clean driving licence, and have informed your insurance company that you will be a volunteer driver during this time. Mileage will be reimbursed at 40p/mile.

5. Stewarding – Saturday 27th September 4pm-6pm City Park, 6pm-10pm Bradford Hotel, and Sunday 28th September 10am-2pm Kala Sangam

We will need stewards to help guide members of the public who are attending our events on Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday morning. You will be directing people to the right location, pointing out amenities, giving out information, helping with refreshments and helping to create a relaxed, enjoyable and welcoming occasion. You will also be helping the events to run safely and reporting any concerns to the volunteer coordinators or other responsible people.

Benefits of volunteering

You will be meeting a lot of new people and helping to promote Bradford as a great place to visit and experience live music.

All food and refreshments will be provided when you are on shift.

What we expect from our volunteers

You must be over 18 years of age (over 25 for driving), have good communication skills and be friendly and welcoming.
